By Raymond Enoch
The two-day workshop organized by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Information Integrity concluded today in Abuja with a strong call for journalists to double their efforts in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of news sources while combatting the growing threats of misinformation and disinformation in media reporting.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Joel Ahofodji, Director of Information and Communications at the ECOWAS Commission, emphasized the essential role the media plays in advancing the Commission’s objectives. He described the media as an “indispensable partner” in fulfilling the ECOWAS mandate and reaffirmed the importance of journalism in achieving the Commission’s Vision 2050. Ahofodji also expressed his appreciation for the dedication and quality of reports consistently produced by journalists across the region.

The workshop, which attracted participants from television, radio, newspaper, and online news platforms in Nigeria, featured an in-depth curriculum designed to address the complexities of information integrity. Key topics included an overview of ECOWAS Vision 2050, the threat of information disorder, conflict reporting in West Africa and the Sahel, and the rise of anti-democratic narratives in the region. Additionally, attendees were trained on fact-checking techniques, conflict-sensitive reporting, and identifying bad actors in the media landscape.
One of the workshop’s standout moments was the session on leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to track and counter anti-democratic narratives. Participants were introduced to AI’s potential for detecting trends and patterns that may signal emerging disinformation campaigns, equipping them with innovative tools for investigative journalism.
At the end of the workshop, certificates of participation were awarded to the journalists, signifying their commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity. The workshop concluded on a hopeful note, with ECOWAS urging the media to continue strengthening their roles as defenders of democracy in West Africa.
