The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has deepened its institutional capacity for peacebuilding and preventive diplomacy through an advanced training programme in negotiation, mediation, and conflict resolution for its senior officials held at the Clingendael Institute of International Relations, The Hague, Kingdom of the Netherlands.

The week-long programme, which took place from 27 to 31 October 2025, brought together ECOWAS Special Representatives, Resident and Permanent Representatives, Members of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at ambassadorial level, and Members of the Council of the Wise.

Organized by the Netherlands Institute of International Relations “Clingendael” with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the session formed part of the 10th Edition of the Clingendael Academy Programme on Peace Negotiations.

Over five days, participants engaged in intensive, hands-on sessions designed to strengthen their practical understanding of negotiation dynamics, mediation strategies, and conflict resolution techniques. The programme also focused on key attributes of effective mediators and negotiators, consensus-building among diverse actors, and the strategic use of mediation support in complex political environments.

The training underscores ECOWAS’ continued commitment to consolidating peace and stability in West Africa by equipping its senior officials with world-class tools and knowledge to effectively manage and resolve conflicts across the region.
