By Raymond Enoch

In a bid to enhance regional integration and uplift border communities, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), in collaboration with the government of Guinea-Bissau, has intensified efforts to improve agriculture and education in São Domingos and Tendinto.

This is coming as part of the ECOWAS Cross-Border Cooperation Support Programme (ECBCSP) 2023–2027,
As a result , a five-day Monitoring and Evaluation mission took place from January 13 to 17, 2025, to assess the progress of key initiatives aimed at boosting local economies and educational opportunities.

Among the flagship interventions is the provision of fenced farmlands equipped with 12 boreholes to support women engaged in agriculture. This initiative seeks to promote food security, enhance economic independence for women, and create sustainable livelihoods in the region. Additionally, ECOWAS has donated 134 desk chairs to schools in the Quinara region, ensuring improved access to quality education for students.

Speaking on the impact of the programme, Mr. Albert Siaw-Boateng, ECOWAS Director of Free Movement, commended the initiative for its role in fostering regional cooperation, empowering women, and improving living standards. “This project is a testament to ECOWAS’ commitment to regional integration and sustainable development. By investing in agriculture and education, we are not only enhancing livelihoods but also securing a brighter future for communities along the borders,” he stated.

The ECBCSP is a strategic programme designed to promote cross-border collaboration and socio-economic development across West African nations. By addressing critical needs such as agriculture and education, the initiative is expected to drive long-term progress in the region while strengthening the ties between neighboring countries.

As ECOWAS continues to implement its development agenda, border communities in Guinea-Bissau stand to benefit significantly, with improved access to essential resources that will shape their future for generations to come.
