The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has reaffirmed the regional body’s unwavering commitment to supporting The Gambia in the effective implementation of its Transitional Justice programme.

Dr. Touray made the pledge while receiving a three-member delegation from The Gambia’s Ministry of Justice at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration between the ECOWAS Commission and The Gambia in advancing ongoing efforts to consolidate peace, accountability, and national reconciliation.
The delegation included Ms. Ide Persson, Special Adviser to The Gambia’s Minister of Justice on Transitional Justice; Mr. Abdoulie Hydara, Deputy High Commissioner and Head of Chancery at The Gambia High Commission in Nigeria; and Mr. Abdurrahman Maitama Yusuf, Director of Public Prosecutions at the Ministry of Justice.

Speaking during the meeting, Ms. Persson explained that the visit sought ECOWAS’ support and partnership in implementing The Gambia’s Transitional Justice roadmap, which focuses on addressing past human rights violations, promoting reconciliation, and strengthening the rule of law.

“We are at a critical stage in our Transitional Justice process and believe that ECOWAS’ technical and institutional support will be invaluable to ensuring the success of our national implementation plan,” she said.
In his remarks, Dr. Touray commended the Gambian authorities for their continued commitment to justice and reconciliation. He assured the delegation of ECOWAS’ readiness to provide technical and political support to ensure the timely and successful implementation of The Gambia’s Transitional Justice process.
“ECOWAS stands firmly with The Gambia in its efforts to ensure accountability, national healing, and lasting peace,” Dr. Touray stated. “We will continue to provide the necessary support and guidance for the implementation of the Transitional Justice process and the recommendations arising from the Special Tribunal.”
Discussions during the meeting covered areas of collaboration such as technical assistance, capacity building, and coordination with regional justice mechanisms. Both sides expressed optimism about strengthening institutional partnerships to consolidate democratic governance and the rule of law in The Gambia.
The visit highlights ECOWAS’ sustained commitment to promoting peace, justice, and human rights across the region — in line with the ECOWAS Vision 2050 and its core mandate of fostering regional stability, good governance, and integration.
