In a landmark step toward deepening regional cooperation and fostering sustainable development, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) have signed a comprehensive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bolster shared development priorities across West Africa.

The agreement, sealed anf signed in Paris by H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, and Mr. Mathias Cormann, Secretary-General of the OECD, outlines a robust framework for collaboration across critical policy areas. These include regional economic integration, trade and investment facilitation, good governance, food security, and human capital development — with a special focus on empowering women and youth.

“This MoU is a strong signal of our mutual commitment to building a more resilient, inclusive, and prosperous West Africa,” said Dr. Touray. “It complements ECOWAS Vision 2050 and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 by translating shared ambitions into concrete action.”
Mr. Cormann echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of evidence-based policymaking in addressing the region’s challenges. “This partnership reflects our joint dedication to supporting sustainable growth and good governance in West Africa. It is also a model for cross-regional cooperation.”
The ECOWAS–OECD alliance underscores the growing significance of global partnerships in addressing regional priorities and advancing long-term development goals. By pooling resources, knowledge, and technical expertise, both institutions aim to deliver transformative outcomes for the people of West Africa.
As the region continues to navigate complex global dynamics — from economic shifts to climate change — the MoU serves as a timely catalyst for strategic action and regional resilience.
