ECOWAS Observers Laud Peaceful and Transparent Presidential Election in Guinea By Raymond Enoch
The ECOWAS Election Observation Mission (EOM) has commended the peaceful conduct of Guinea’s 28 December presidential election, describing the voting and vote-counting process as calm, transparent, and professional.
Speaking from the “Sourds-Muets” polling centre in the Boulbinet area of Conakry, H.E. Dr. Abdoulie Janneh, Head of the ECOWAS EOM, said the mission observed the full electoral cycle—from the opening of polling stations to the final tally of ballots—consistent with ECOWAS standards for election monitoring.
“We are satisfied with the level of access granted to our delegation,” Dr. Janneh stated. “Our interactions with polling agents, security personnel, and voters indicate a process handled with professionalism. It is my hope that this level of transparency was mirrored across the country as Guinea takes this historic step toward restoring constitutional order.”
The elections are a landmark moment for Guinea, following a four-year transitional period after the military takeover on 5 September 2021. Approximately 6.7 million registered voters were eligible to elect a president for a seven-year term.
On 27 December, a day before the elections, the ECOWAS EOM, in collaboration with international observers including the African Union, Mano River Union, and the Francophone Community, held a joint briefing to review election preparations. The session emphasized information sharing and coordination among observer missions to ensure a free, fair, and credible electoral process.
Dr. Janneh also met with ECOWAS ambassadors and other international envoys accredited to Guinea, reinforcing the importance of transparency and cooperation in the electoral process.
The heads of all election observation missions are scheduled to release preliminary declarations tomorrow, 30 December, at a joint meeting at Kaloum Hotel in Conakry, including representatives from ECOWAS, the African Union, Mano River Union, and the Francophonie.
The ECOWAS Commission had constituted an Election Observation Mission as part of its high-level support to member states and as a strategic effort to deepen democracy and stability across the region.
Paradigm News International would continue to reach out to Conakry headquarters of Guinea to update on the final stages and announcements of the winner of the presidential elections at the end of the process .
