The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed profound grief at the passing of former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari, describing his death as a moment of deep loss for Nigeria and the West African subregion.

In an official message released today, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of all ECOWAS institutions to the late President’s family, to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Government of Nigeria, and the entire Nigerian populace.

“It is with deep sorrow that the world learnt of the passing of His Excellency General Muhammadu Buhari,” the message read. “ECOWAS salutes the memory of this distinguished statesman whose invaluable contributions greatly advanced democracy and regional integration in West Africa and across the African continent.”

General Buhari, a former military head of state who returned to power as a democratically elected President in 2015, served two terms until 2023. He was known for his firm stance on anti-corruption, national security, and regional diplomacy.

Throughout his tenure, Buhari was a visible presence in ECOWAS affairs, lending support to regional peacekeeping missions, economic cooperation, and constitutional order in times of political instability in neighboring countries.

The message concluded with a solemn prayer: “May his soul rest in paradise.”
