The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany have opened a two-day high-level negotiation meeting aimed at strengthening their longstanding partnership across key development priorities.

The meeting, taking place at the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja from November 5 to 6, 2025, brings together senior officials from both sides, including H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission; H.E. Annett Günther, Ambassador of Germany to Nigeria and ECOWAS; and Mr. Christoph Rauh, Director for Africa at Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The talks focus on deepening cooperation in peace and security, regional integration, climate and energy transition, and health. Delegates are also reviewing the progress of ongoing joint initiatives in institutional reform, regional trade, climate-friendly energy solutions, and pandemic preparedness—critical areas shaping West Africa’s sustainable development agenda.

In her opening remarks, Vice President Tchintchibidja commended Germany’s steadfast partnership and its consistent support to ECOWAS in advancing regional stability, governance, and socio-economic growth. She emphasized that such collaborations remain vital for consolidating peace, fostering resilience, and promoting prosperity across the subregion.

Ambassador Günther and Mr. Rauh reaffirmed Germany’s enduring commitment to West Africa’s stability and development, pledging to sustain collaboration with ECOWAS in areas that align with shared priorities—particularly peacebuilding, energy transformation, and economic integration.

The ECOWAS–Germany negotiations are expected to produce renewed strategic frameworks that will further solidify cooperation and deliver concrete outcomes to bolster the region’s development aspirations.
