The President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has pledged the regional bloc’s continued support to Ethiopia’s efforts in fostering peace, stability, and development across the Horn of Africa, reaffirming the importance of inter-regional dialogue in advancing Africa’s collective prosperity.

Dr. Touray made the commitment while receiving H.E. Ambassador Legesse Geremew Haile, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, during a courtesy visit to the ECOWAS Commission Headquarters in Abuja on 30 October 2025.

The meeting served as a platform for both leaders to exchange views on shared priorities, particularly the political and security situation in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. Dr. Touray underscored that sustained peace and stability across all subregions of the continent are essential to achieving the African Union’s Agenda 2063 vision of “The Africa We Want.”

Commending Ethiopia’s progress in peacebuilding, reconciliation, and development, the ECOWAS President hailed the recent completion and inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), describing it as a milestone in Africa’s drive toward self-sufficiency and economic transformation.

“I congratulate the Government of Ethiopia for the successful completion of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam. The project is a monumental step toward improving electricity access and spurring development in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. With sound policies, peace, and security, Ethiopia’s growth potential is boundless,” Dr. Touray stated.

He further assured Ethiopia of ECOWAS’ readiness to partner with the African Union and other regional bodies to enhance dialogue and cooperation across the continent, particularly on issues of peace and regional integration.

In response, Ambassador Haile commended ECOWAS for its leadership in promoting stability in West Africa and highlighted Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to strengthen peace, unity, and socio-economic progress. He reaffirmed Ethiopia’s commitment to continued dialogue with riparian states over the GERD and to promoting mutual understanding and cooperation in the region.

“The successful completion of the GERD is a source of pride for all Ethiopians. Generating about 5,500 megawatts of electricity, it will not only power millions of homes but also contribute to regional development and integration,” the Ambassador noted.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing a shared determination to deepen collaboration between ECOWAS and Ethiopia in peace, governance, and regional cooperation — reinforcing Africa’s collective march toward unity, stability, and prosperity.
