ECOWAS Delivers Humanitarian Aid to Flood-Affected Communities in Cabo Verde

In a demonstration of regional solidarity, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has intensified its humanitarian efforts in Cabo Verde, providing much-needed support to communities devastated by the 2023 floods. As part of its commitment to disaster relief, ECOWAS has allocated a $770,143 aid package to help affected families rebuild their lives.
A high-level technical mission, led by Dr. Sintiki Tarfa-Ugbe, Director of Humanitarian and Social Affairs, has been deployed to Cabo Verde to oversee the implementation of this support. Representing the ECOWAS Commission President and the Commissioner for Social Affairs and Human Development, the team is working closely with Cabo Verde’s Ministry of Family, Inclusion, and Social Development, along with local implementing partners, to ensure the aid reaches those in dire need.
The mission’s primary goal is to assess the progress of assistance provided to over 200 families, with a particular focus on housing support for 80 families and livelihood assistance for 200 others. This initiative underscores ECOWAS’s ongoing commitment to humanitarian relief and social protection, ensuring that affected communities receive not just immediate aid but long-term support to rebuild their lives.
For many families, the assistance has been a lifeline, offering a pathway to recovery after the devastation caused by the floods. By providing both shelter and economic support, ECOWAS aims to restore stability and dignity to those most impacted by the disaster.
This intervention aligns with ECOWAS’s broader mission to strengthen regional resilience against climate-induced disasters. As extreme weather events become more frequent in West Africa, the bloc continues to enhance its disaster response mechanisms to provide timely and effective relief to member states in distress.
With the ongoing monitoring of the aid implementation, ECOWAS reaffirms its role as a pillar of regional cooperation, proving that in times of crisis, solidarity remains the cornerstone of progress.
