In a move aimed at bolstering peacekeeping efforts across West Africa, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has received a second consignment of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The equipment handover, which took place in Accra, marks a significant milestone in strengthening the Centre’s digital infrastructure and training capacity.

This donation forms part of the ECOWAS Peace and Security Architecture and Operations (EPSAO) project, a collaborative initiative co-financed by the German government and the European Union. It follows an earlier provision of ICT equipment in 2024, initiated through a joint needs assessment conducted in 2019 by ECOWAS and its Training Centres of Excellence (TCE).

During the official handover ceremony, ECOWAS Resident Representative to Ghana, Ambassador Mohammed Lawan Gana, reaffirmed the regional bloc’s commitment to empowering its training institutions to enhance the effectiveness of peace support operations. “This support is a reflection of ECOWAS’s strategic intent to build resilient, digitally capable institutions that can lead peace and security efforts within the region,” he stated.

Receiving the donation on behalf of KAIPTC, Acting Commandant Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong expressed sincere appreciation for the continued partnership. He emphasized that the new ICT assets would be pivotal in expanding KAIPTC’s e-learning capabilities. “This support will enable us to extend our digital learning platforms, making peacekeeping training more accessible across the sub-region and the continent,” he said.

As a designated ECOWAS Training Centre of Excellence, KAIPTC plays a critical role in equipping military, police, and civilian personnel with the necessary tools and knowledge to manage contemporary security challenges. This latest investment underscores the importance of technology in modern peacekeeping and reflects a growing regional emphasis on innovation-driven capacity building.
