ECOWAS Condemns Failed Coup in Benin, Hails Republican Army, Reaffirms Support for Government By Raymond Enoch

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning what it described as an attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, calling it an affront to democratic order and the will of the people.

In a statement released in Abuja on todsy Sunday, 7th December 2025, ECOWAS said it received with consternation reports of the failed coup plot, stressing that any unconstitutional seizure of power will not be tolerated within the region.

The Commission denounced the move as “a subversion of the will of the people of Benin,” adding that the bloc remains firm in defending constitutional governance and stability across member states.

ECOWAS commended the Government of Benin and the Republican Army for acting swiftly to neutralize the situation and restore calm. It also called for full respect for the Constitution of the Republic of Benin, which it said remains the legitimate framework for political authority in the country.

The regional body further warned that those involved in the plot will be held individually and collectively responsible for any loss of lives or destruction of property linked to their actions.

“ECOWAS will support the Government and the people in all forms necessary to defend the Constitution and the territorial integrity of Benin,” the statement concluded.

The latest development comes at a time when ECOWAS continues to confront threats to democratic governance across West Africa, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on coups and unconstitutional changes of government in the region.
