ECOWAS Commission President Dr Omar Alieu Touray Visits Guinea-Bissau, Urges for Peaceful Polls and Regional Unity.

At the invitation of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, embarked on a high-level working visit to Guinea-Bissau from May 25 to 26, 2025.

The visit, part of ECOWAS’s continued engagement with its Member States, aimed to assess the political climate ahead of Guinea-Bissau’s general elections slated for November 23, 2025. In a meeting with President Embaló, both leaders discussed strategies to reinforce democratic institutions, ensure national stability, and guarantee inclusive and transparent elections.

Dr. Touray also briefed President Embaló on his recent diplomatic engagements with the foreign ministers of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—underscoring ECOWAS’s commitment to regional dialogue and collective efforts to sustain peace across West Africa.

The visit highlights ECOWAS’s proactive stance in promoting democratic governance and regional cohesion amid evolving political dynamics.
