In a landmark diplomatic engagement on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) General Assembly, Ambassador Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah, ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, met with Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security.

The meeting underscored the deepening collaboration between the two regional bodies in advancing stability, governance, and security across Africa.

The high-level discussions between the two leaders came as Ambassador Adeoye celebrated his re-election, with Dr. Musah extending his congratulations and reaffirming ECOWAS’s commitment to working closely with the AU to address pressing security and governance challenges in the region. Both leaders acknowledged the importance of strengthening institutional coordination and aligning their peace efforts for greater impact.

During the meeting, the commissioners identified key areas for enhanced cooperation, including the execution of joint technical missions to selected member states, increased engagement between the AU Peace and Security Council and the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, and the facilitation of direct consultations between their respective teams.

These measures aim to bolster existing peace initiatives and create a more unified front in tackling security threats and governance issues.

“This collaboration is crucial for addressing the complexities of peace and security in Africa. By working together, ECOWAS and the AU can build more resilient and coordinated responses to the challenges facing our region,” stated Ambassador Musah.

The agreement between the two bodies reflects their shared vision of a peaceful and prosperous Africa, driven by strong governance, proactive diplomacy, and conflict resolution mechanisms. As both institutions continue to navigate evolving regional dynamics, their strengthened partnership signals a renewed commitment to fostering sustainable peace and stability in Africa.
