In a significant move to bolster fiscal governance and professional standards across West Africa, the ECOWAS Commission and the Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA) have reaffirmed their strategic partnership.

During a high-level meeting held at the ECOWAS Headquarters in Abuja, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, welcomed a delegation from ABWA led by its President, Mr. Mor Dieng. The discussions centered on renewing the Memorandum of Understanding between the two bodies, with a focus on enhancing professional mobility, harmonizing accounting standards, and reinforcing public sector transparency and accountability across ECOWAS Member States.

President Touray emphasized the crucial role of the accounting profession in ensuring financial integrity and good governance, stating, “Integration is not only political — it is functional.” He further reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to partnerships that advance its 4×4 Strategic Objectives and Vision 2050.

The renewed collaboration signals a deepened resolve by both institutions to align regional financial practices with international best standards, ultimately fostering greater economic integration and trust in public institutions across West Africa.
