ECOWAS Addresses UN Security Council on African-Led Counterterrorism Strategies

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held a high-level session under the Presidency of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, focusing on “African-led and Development-Focused Counterterrorism Initiatives.” The meeting sought to garner global backing for Africa-driven efforts that combine socio-economic development with counterterrorism strategies across the continent.

Speaking on behalf of H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador Kinza Jawara-Njai, ECOWAS’ Permanent Observer to the UN, outlined key regional actions. She emphasized the ECOWAS Action Plan for the Eradication of Terrorism, the deployment of the ECOWAS Standby Force, and the adoption of targeted operational strategies to address terrorism in West Africa.

The session highlighted the importance of aligning security measures with development efforts. ECOWAS reiterated its dedication to advancing peace and stability through African-led, innovative solutions aimed at tackling the root causes of terrorism and fostering sustainable growth.

The meeting concluded with strong appeals for enhanced international support of Africa’s initiatives. By integrating socio-economic development into counterterrorism approaches, participants envisioned a sustainable path toward long-term peace and security across the continent.
