ECOWAS @50:W/ African Leaders Return to Lagos Today to Rekindle Regional Unity and Economic Vision.

By Raymond Enoch

Fifty years after, fifteen West African nations came together with a shared vision of regional unity and economic integration, the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are back in Lagos, the birthplace of the historic pact, to reaffirm their commitment to that founding dream.

On May 28, 1975, Heads of State and Government gathered at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) to sign the treaty establishing ECOWAS. Today, exactly five decades later, they return—not just to celebrate a golden jubilee, but to reassess challenges, chart a renewed course, and strengthen the solidarity that has bound the region through its toughest trials and triumphs.

At the heart of the commemorations is a call to deepen integration, bolster economic cooperation, and confront threats to the region’s collective progress. From the monetary union still in gestation, to security and political instability in parts of the region, ECOWAS faces both a legacy of achievement and a future of urgent decisions.

Speaking to Paradigm News, Mr. Ben Osawe, Advocacy Manager at Tearfund Nigeria, expressed cautious optimism:

“I’m excited to see the growth of ECOWAS to where it is today. But we are not there yet, especially regarding a common currency. The Lagos Plan of Action needs to be revived. The Heads of State must recommit to the vision. We are stronger together—and Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso must be encouraged to return to the fold.”

Dr. Garba Dauda of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), West Africa, echoed this sentiment, highlighting both the milestones and the mission ahead.

“Yes, it’s been a tough journey, but ECOWAS remains a model. The free movement protocol is a standout success. This anniversary is more than ceremonial—it’s a chance to evolve from an ECOWAS of governments to an ECOWAS of the people.”

Dr Ameh Onoja CPAT Nigeria said that ECOWAS need to work on its gaps and improve on the founding vision of the organization.

The significance of today’s event resonates deeply—not only as a historical landmark but also as a pivotal moment to rekindle the founding ideals of regional integration, peace, and prosperity.
