CLEEN Foundation and UNDP Tackle Weapon Management in Northeast Nigeria, Holds Security Workshop in Yola. By Raymond Enoch

In a significant stride towards enhancing security in Northeast Nigeria, the CLEEN Foundation, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), launched a pivotal four-day capacity-building workshop in Yola, Adamawa State.

The workshop brought together stakeholders from the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), national security agencies, and key Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to address the pressing issue of weapons and ammunition management (WAM) in post-conflict settings.

The workshop aimed to develop and implement effective strategies for WAM, focusing on the integration of voluntary security groups into formal systems, enhancement of intelligence-led operations, and strengthening of border patrols. A high-level panel assessed emerging security threats in Adamawa State, including rising incidents of kidnapping, rape, terrorism, and illegal mining, and provided key recommendations to mitigate these challenges.

Participants emphasized the importance of community sensitization and victim support, underscoring that security is a collective responsibility requiring active collaboration between government agencies and local communities. The event also featured an advocacy visit to the State Commander of the Adamawa State Vigilante Group of Nigeria, reinforcing stakeholder collaboration on WAM efforts.

This workshop marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to combat insecurity in the Northeast, highlighting the critical role of collaborative initiatives in fostering peace and stability in the region.
