On the 28th of August 2025, the Headquarters of the 1st Division Nigerian Army played host to the distinguished participants of Course 9/2025 from the Army War College Nigeria (AWCN). The delegation, led by the Commandant of the College, Major General Umar Mohammed Alkali, embarked on a comprehensive Operational Theatre visit to Sector 1 of Joint Task Force Operation FANSAN YAMMA, located in the strategic heart of Kaduna.

This high-profile visit, aimed at providing in-depth operational insights to the participants, included 46 senior military officers from diverse backgrounds—two officers from the Nigerian Navy, one from the Nigerian Air Force, as well as five senior officers from allied nations such as The Gambia and Chad. The delegation was also accompanied by members of the AWCN Faculty.

In his address, Major General Alkali emphasized the invaluable experience the participants would gain from witnessing firsthand the operational dynamics in the field. The Commandant encouraged the officers to leverage this exposure to enhance their strategic acumen, especially when confronting the multi-faceted threats posed by terrorists in the region.

Brigadier General Akinkunmi Oyewunmi Odubiyi, the Course Coordinator, further elaborated on the core objectives of the visit, highlighting the critical role of both kinetic and non-kinetic activities in the ongoing Operation FANSAN YAMMA. The operation, which spans multiple states including Kaduna, Niger, and Sokoto, is aimed at decimating terrorist cells while safeguarding local communities.

The visit featured a series of comprehensive briefings and lectures aimed at educating participants about the coordinated efforts of the Air and Maritime Components, which provide essential support to the Land Forces in their fight against insurgents. These sessions allowed the participants to engage in interactive discussions on key operational strategies, underscoring the importance of integrated military cooperation across various forces in a complex operational environment.

A highlight of the day’s events was a courtesy visit to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) by the Commandant and the delegation, where a robust exchange of ideas on the operational successes and challenges of FANSAN YAMMA took place.

This visit serves as a key component of the AWCN’s educational curriculum, designed to deepen the understanding of operational strategy among senior officers from the Nigerian Armed Forces and allied nations. The participants departed with a renewed sense of duty and strategic foresight, ready to apply their newfound knowledge in future operations.

The integration of land, air, and maritime forces in this operational visit underscores Nigeria’s commitment to comprehensive, multi-dimensional strategies in safeguarding national security.
