In a decisive move to expand access to higher education and spur national development, the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) has announced the appointment of Mr. Ernest Reuben Aubee as Chairperson of the Governing Board for the newly strengthened Student Revolving Loan Scheme (SRLS).
The appointment marks a major milestone in The Gambia’s push to empower young citizens through affordable and sustainable financing for tertiary education. Mr. Aubee, a seasoned development expert and former senior ECOWAS official, is widely respected for his extensive experience in regional administration, policy coordination, and institutional development—credentials that position him as a pivotal figure in reshaping the SRLS for greater national impact.
MoHERST described the scheme as a transformative pillar in its commitment to “powering the dreams of Gambian students,” noting that the SRLS is poised to deliver more inclusive and reliable financial support to learners across the country. With Mr. Aubee’s leadership, the ministry expressed confidence that the scheme will unlock student potential, support skills development, and strengthen the nation’s human capital base.
Education stakeholders, student groups, and policy analysts have welcomed the appointment, saying it signals a renewed focus on transparency, sustainability, and long-term planning in the management of educational financing.
Mr. Aubee is expected to steer the board through a new operational framework aimed at widening loan access, improving repayment systems, and ensuring the scheme’s long-term viability.
As The Gambia intensifies investment in education and innovation, MoHERST called on the public to support the new leadership and celebrate what it described as “a transformative journey to make higher education accessible for all.”
The announcement has already gained momentum online under hashtags such as #NewGambia, #StudentSuccess, #InvestInEducation, and #MoHERST, reflecting the national optimism surrounding this significant step forward.
