AfDB’s DG Abdul Kamara Nominated for West Africa Heroes Award By Raymond Enoch

Abdul B. Kamara, Director General of the Nigeria Country Department of the African Development Bank Group (AfDB), has been nominated for the prestigious West Africa Heroes Awards in recognition of his remarkable contributions to Pan-African development, economic leadership, and regional transformation.

The nomination was announced by Heroes Media Group, organisers of the annual awards ceremony that honours individuals whose work has significantly advanced leadership, development, and social progress across West Africa.

According to the organisers, Kamara’s nomination reflects his distinguished career in development finance, macroeconomic policy leadership, and institutional transformation across the African continent.

Currently heading the Nigeria Country Department of the African Development Bank, Kamara is widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading development strategists. His professional journey spans multilateral finance, post-conflict governance, and regional economic integration, earning him recognition as a respected voice in continental development policy.

Over the years, Kamara has served in several high-level international roles. He previously held the position of Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations, where he worked as Deputy Joint Special Representative for the African Union–United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).

Within the African Development Bank Group, he has also served as Country Manager and Resident Representative for Ethiopia, Resident Representative for Sudan, and Manager of the Bank’s Research Division, after earlier serving as a Senior Agricultural Economist.

Through these assignments, Kamara developed extensive expertise in macroeconomic management, sovereign finance, development policy reform, post-conflict recovery, and the management of large-scale development programmes across Africa.

Under his leadership, the AfDB’s Nigeria Country Department continues to support key national priorities, including infrastructure development, energy sector reforms, private sector expansion, agricultural transformation, youth employment, and inclusive economic growth.

These initiatives align Nigeria’s development agenda with broader continental objectives for sustainable growth and regional integration.

Beyond his institutional achievements, Kamara’s career reflects intellectual depth, merit-driven leadership, and a strong commitment to Pan-African service within global development institutions. His rise to senior international leadership has also inspired many young Africans—particularly in Sierra Leone—to pursue careers in economics, public service, and development finance.

Responding to the nomination, Kamara expressed appreciation for the recognition.

“Thanks a lot, my brother, for this honour which I greatly appreciate. I have read through this fantastic write-up, which is well written and reflects my role,” he said in a message acknowledging the nomination.

The West Africa Heroes Awards celebrates individuals whose lives exemplify leadership, integrity, service, and transformative regional impact.

The awards build on the success of the National Heroes Awards 2025 hosted by Heroes Media Group on May 10, 2025, at the Freetown International Conference Centre, where prominent personalities were honoured for their contributions to national development.

Organisers say the West Africa Heroes Awards 2026, scheduled for May 9 in Freetown, will bring together policymakers, development leaders, diplomats, and emerging professionals from across the region to celebrate excellence in leadership and service.

Kamara’s nomination not only highlights his personal achievements but also underscores the growing development impact of the African Development Bank Group across West Africa.
