Women Group Advocates for Mental Health Support in Nigeria. By Raymond Enoch.
In a strategic call with vibrant energy and determination, women gathered not just to dance—but to speak up for a cause often left in the shadows: the mental health.
At the heart of the gathering was Ambassador Zainab Mohammed, spokesperson for the Coalition of Women in Governance (CWIG), and convener of the Abuja Women Dance initiative.who delivered a powerful call for increased government support for women’s mental health.
The seminar, themed “Promoting Healthy Well-being Through Alternative Medicine”, was more than just a health talk. It was a heartfelt conversation about the invisible wounds many women carry as they balance the burdens of caregiving, family, and societal expectations.
“Too many women are mentally unstable and yet expected to nurture and support others. It shouldn’t be that way,” Mohammed said, emphasizing the urgency of establishing community-based counseling centers and mental health hubs across Nigeria. Her proposal includes training traditional rulers’ wives as frontline mental health advocates—a grassroots approach aimed at destigmatizing mental health issues and identifying early warning signs.
“We need to understand that when a woman’s mind is unwell, the entire home ecosystem suffers. Dysfunction breeds dysfunction,” she added. “Let’s talk about it. Let’s remove the stigma.”
Mohammed also urged the Ministries of Women Affairs and Health to join hands with civil society groups to establish counseling and support structures for women, especially in rural and underserved areas.
Rotarian Evelyn Onyillo, a participant at the event, echoed the urgency. “The state of mind is everything. When mental health is neglected, it reflects in homes, in relationships, and eventually across society. This kind of dialogue is long overdue.”
The Abuja Women Dance initiative may use rhythm and movement to unite, but its mission goes far deeper: to amplify the voices of women and bring healing to their minds and communities—one conversation, one dance step, and one support system at a time.
Highlights of event is the showcasing of Emiral Global,Elixir 100% Natural Immune booster where participants were educated in it’s use to support the state of their health.
