ECOWAS Condemns Benin Terror Attack, Calls for United Front Against Rising Threats By Raymond Enoch
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the terrorist attack that struck the Republic of Benin on April 17, 2025, leaving several people dead and many others injured.
In a press statement released from its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria ECOWAS expressed deep sorrow and outrage over what it described as a “heinous, barbaric, and cowardly act.”
President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Mr. Omar Alieu Touray, extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the government and citizens of Benin Republic. He also wished a swift recovery to the wounded and reaffirmed ECOWAS’s unwavering support for the country.
“This tragic incident once again seeks to sow terror and destabilize our Member States,” the statement read. “ECOWAS stands firmly by the Beninese authorities in their determined efforts to combat terrorism and ensure the security of their citizens and territory.”
The attack, which occurred amidst increasing threats across the region, underscores the urgent need for stronger cooperation among West African nations, especially those sharing common borders. ECOWAS emphasized that pooling resources and intelligence is essential to mounting an effective, collective response to terrorism.
As part of its ongoing regional counter-terrorism strategy, ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the operationalization of its Standby Force. The bloc also called on international partners to bolster both national and regional efforts to eradicate the growing menace of terrorism in West Africa.
“This is a critical moment for solidarity and unity,” the Commission urged, stressing that peace, security, and development in the region depend on cohesive and decisive action.
The statement concludes with a renewed pledge from ECOWAS to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all its Member States in the fight against terror.
