World Bank VP Visits ECOWAS Commission President, Reinforces Strategic Partnership for Regional Growth. By Raymond Enoch
In a move that underscores the deepening collaboration between global financial institutions and regional bodies in Africa, the Vice President of the World Bank for Western and Central Africa, Mr. Ousmane Diagana, today paid a courtesy visit to the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
Accompanied by top officials from the World Bank leadership team, including Nigeria Country Director Dr. Ndiamé Diop, Regional Director for Prosperity Mr. Abebe Adugna, and Manager for External Affairs Ms. Naye Bathily, Mr. Diagana’s visit focused on reinforcing the longstanding partnership between the two institutions.
During the meeting, Mr. Diagana described ECOWAS as a strategic anchor for regional integration in Africa, praising the Commission’s pivotal role in driving shared prosperity, reducing poverty, and creating job opportunities across the sub-region. He highlighted the meeting as a timely platform to review the progress of ongoing joint programs and explore new avenues for impactful collaboration.
“The World Bank values its partnership with ECOWAS as critical to our mission of transforming lives in West Africa. Together, we can accelerate efforts to tackle development challenges and boost economic resilience,” Mr. Diagana said.
Responding, Dr. Touray expressed heartfelt appreciation for the World Bank’s support and reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to strengthening ties with the institution. He emphasized the need for sustained collaboration to enhance the welfare and livelihoods of West African citizens.
“This visit reaffirms the shared vision we have with the World Bank — to build a stronger, more prosperous region. We are determined to continue this journey together, for the benefit of our Community,” Dr. Touray stated.
