ECOWAS Commissioner Champions Economic Integration at AMAO and ZMAO Meetings

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its commitment to regional economic integration and monetary cooperation. Mrs. Massandjé TOURE-LITSE, ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture made this declaration while, participating at the statutory meetings of the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA) and the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ), held at Freetown, Sierra Leone.

The high-level meetings brought together central bank governors, financial policymakers, and economic experts from across West Africa.

Discussions at the meeting focused on enhancing regional regulatory frameworks, improving the quality of statistical data, and strengthening evaluation mechanisms to accelerate economic convergence within the ECOWAS.

During the WAMZ Convergence Council meeting, Commissioner Toure-Litse emphasized the need for member states to intensify their efforts toward harmonizing financial regulations.

She reiterated ECOWAS’ unwavering readiness to collaborate with all stakeholders to implement the ECOWAS Monetary Cooperation Programme (EMCP), a crucial step toward achieving a single currency for the region.

“Strong coordination and cooperation among member states are essential in achieving our economic and monetary goals,” she stated, assuring that the ECOWAS Commission remains fully committed to working with regional institutions and national governments to foster economic growth and stability.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Commissioner Toure-Litse, accompanied by her team and Mr. Harouna Moussa, ECOWAS Permanent Representative to Sierra Leone, paid courtesy visits to key government officials, including the Ministers of Finance, Trade, and Planning. These engagements underscored ECOWAS’ dedication to deepening economic ties and fostering sustainable development across West Africa.

The ECOWAS Commission, through its Directorate of Communication, encourages all stakeholders to remain engaged in the region’s economic transformation journey.
