Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Officially Exit ECOWAS, Transitional Measures in Place
By Raymond Enoch
Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) as of January 29, 2025. However, the ECOWAS Commission has announced transitional measures to ensure stability and minimize disruptions for citizens and businesses in the region.
In a press statement issued today, ECOWAS confirmed that citizens of the three countries can continue to use ECOWAS-branded passports and identity cards, enjoy visa-free movement, and engage in trade under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS). The statement also assured that ECOWAS officials from the withdrawing nations would receive full support while carrying out assignments for the community.
These temporary arrangements will remain in place until a structured framework for future engagement is determined. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to regional solidarity and emphasized that ECOWAS remains open to dialogue with the three countries as the transition unfolds.
