Hope Arrives in Taraba: Nentawe’s Free Medical Outreach Draws Thousands as Lifesaving Care Reaches Every Senatorial District By Raymond Enoch
Hope has replaced despair for thousands of residents across Taraba State as the Renewed Hope Free Medical and Surgical Outreach 2026, initiated to commemorate the 58th birthday of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, entered its third day with overwhelming public participation.
From Wukari to Takum, Bali, Gembu, Karim Lamido and Ardo-Kola, long queues of patients have continued to gather daily at designated medical centres, seeking treatment for illnesses many had lived with for years because of financial constraints and limited access to specialist healthcare.
A visit by Paradigm News to the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari, revealed an atmosphere filled with hope as doctors, nurses, laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals worked tirelessly to attend to hundreds of patients arriving from different communities across the Southern Senatorial District.
The outreach, which many beneficiaries described as timely and life-changing, is providing free medical consultations, laboratory investigations, medications, specialist care and surgical interventions without any financial cost to patients.
Among those receiving treatment was Wama Adi, a resident of Wukari, who described the programme as “an intervention too kind” at a period when many families can barely afford basic healthcare.
“This is more than medical treatment. It has restored hope to many of us who never imagined we would receive this kind of care free of charge,” he said.
Medical personnel participating in the exercise were observed conducting consultations, screening patients, prescribing medications and preparing those requiring surgical procedures, while support teams ensured smooth coordination despite the increasing number of beneficiaries.
The initiative is widely seen as one of the largest humanitarian healthcare interventions undertaken in Taraba State in recent years, targeting thousands of residents across the state’s three senatorial districts.
The first phase of the exercise, running from August 3 to August 7, is taking place simultaneously at six healthcare facilities, including the Federal University Teaching Hospital, Wukari; General Hospital, Takum; General Hospital, Bali; General Hospital, Gembu in Sardauna Local Government Area; Bambur General Hospital in Karim Lamido Local Government Area; and the Primary Health Care Centre, Sunkani in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area.
The programme will officially be flagged off on August 8, coinciding with Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda’s 58th birthday.
The second phase, scheduled to run from August 8 to August 22, will shift attention to specialist consultations and advanced surgical interventions at the Federal Medical Centre, Jalingo, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Jalingo, where more complex medical cases will be managed by specialist teams.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, is expected as the Guest of Honour during the official flag-off, while the Governor of Taraba State, Dr. Agbu Kefas, will serve as host.
Residents across the state have continued to commend the initiative, describing it as a practical demonstration of compassionate leadership and a major contribution towards expanding access to quality healthcare for vulnerable communities.
For many beneficiaries, the outreach represents more than a birthday celebration. It is a humanitarian investment restoring dignity, saving lives and reaffirming that quality healthcare can reach even the most underserved communities when leadership is driven by compassion and service.
