FRSC Secures Conviction Over Assault and Abduction of Marshal in Abuja By Raymond Enoch
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has secured the conviction of a traffic offender involved in the assault and brief abduction of one of its operatives during a routine enforcement operation along the Kubwa Expressway in Abuja.
The incident occurred on 30 April 2026 at about 0900 hours when personnel of RS 7.19 Dutse Alhaji Unit Command were conducting a special patrol operation around the Gegu Filling Station axis. During the operation, officers flagged down a Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number YAB 931 AE for routine traffic enforcement checks.
According to official accounts, the driver of the vehicle refused to comply with lawful instructions and instead engaged in violent conduct. The confrontation escalated, resulting in the assault and unlawful abduction of an FRSC Marshal who was carrying out official duties at the scene.
The situation was, however, quickly brought under control following the swift intervention of the patrol team, supported by Police operatives attached to the enforcement operation. The suspect was immediately arrested and taken to the FCDA Police Station in Kubwa for further investigation. The offending vehicle was also impounded as part of ongoing proceedings.
Following diligent prosecution by relevant authorities, the offender was arraigned before a competent court of jurisdiction. After hearing the case, the court found the defendant guilty and subsequently convicted him. The court imposed a fine of ₦72,000 or, in default of payment, a three-month custodial sentence.
In addition, the court awarded ₦50,000 as compensation to the assaulted FRSC personnel, recognizing the physical and operational impact of the incident on the officer involved.
Reacting to the judgment, the Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, commended the professionalism, restraint, and courage exhibited by the patrol team during the incident, despite what he described as a highly provocative situation.
He emphasized that attacks on traffic enforcement officers represent a direct assault on public safety institutions and the rule of law, warning that such actions will continue to attract strict legal consequences.
“The Corps remains committed to enforcing traffic regulations with firmness, civility, and full respect for human rights,” the Corps Marshal stated. “We will not tolerate any form of obstruction, intimidation, or violence against our personnel who are carrying out lawful duties in the interest of public safety.”
He further urged motorists and road users to cooperate with enforcement agencies at all times, stressing that compliance with traffic laws is critical to reducing road crashes and ensuring safer highways across the country.
The FRSC also reiterated its determination to deepen collaboration with security agencies and the judiciary to ensure that offenders who violate traffic regulations or attack its personnel are consistently brought to justice.
In a formal press statement issued from the Corps Headquarters in Abuja, the Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Osondu Ohaeri, who signed the release, confirmed the conviction and highlighted the Corps’ resolve to protect its personnel and uphold the rule of law.
“Through diligent prosecution, the offender was convicted by a competent court,” Ohaeri stated. “This outcome reinforces the Corps’ resolve to ensure that anyone who attacks or obstructs FRSC personnel is held accountable under the law. We continue to urge members of the public to cooperate with enforcement officers in the collective interest of safer roads nationwide.”
The FRSC maintained that the judgment serves as a deterrent to other road users who may consider obstructing or attacking enforcement personnel, reaffirming its commitment to discipline, order, and improved road safety compliance across Nigeria.
