WAHO and National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) Forge Stronger Front in Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance. By Raymond Enoch

In a significant stride toward safeguarding public health in West Africa, the West Africa Health Organization (WAHO), in partnership with the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), concluded a highly productive working visit this week. The mission highlighted regional commitment to tackling one of the most pressing health threats of our time: antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Yesterday, the WAHO delegation held a high-level meeting with the Honourable Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, presenting key findings from their recent assessment of health facilities. The discussions focused on strengthening AMR surveillance systems, with the team offering technical guidance, identifying gaps, and proposing practical, context-specific solutions to enhance the country’s response to AMR.

The engagement, characterized by active participation from national stakeholders and driven by strong ministerial leadership, underscores the country’s readiness to advance public health initiatives that protect communities from emerging infectious threats.

“This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to building resilient health systems and ensuring that West African populations are better protected against the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance,” the WAHO delegation noted.

As AMR continues to pose global and regional health challenges, this strategic partnership represents an important milestone in reinforcing public health safeguards, fostering innovation, and driving actionable solutions across the region.
