In a bold move to deepen entrepreneurship education in schools across the Federal Capital Territory, the FCT Education Resource Centre (FCT ERC) of the Education Secretariat has organized a five-day intensive training for secondary school teachers drawn from the six Area Councils.

The workshop aligns with the new curriculum recently released by the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), with a strong focus on nurturing an entrepreneurial mindset among learners.

Declaring the programme open, the Secretary for Education, FCT, Dr. Danlami Hayyo, said the training is more than a routine capacity-building exercise but a collective journey to reshape entrepreneurship education for a rapidly evolving world.

He noted that entrepreneurship thrives on inclusion, innovation, and empowerment—values that define the future the Secretariat is committed to building. According to him, every learner deserves an equal opportunity to become an innovator, creator, leader, and job-builder.

Dr. Hayyo further described technology as a great equalizer in modern entrepreneurship education and urged participants to explore digital tools transforming entrepreneurial learning—from online platforms and business management applications to digital marketplaces and AI-driven innovation tools.

He commended the organizers and partners for designing a programme that goes beyond theory to include practical exercises, real-world case studies, group collaboration, and interactive activities. He charged participants to apply the knowledge gained in classrooms, training centres, businesses, and community initiatives, and to democratize learning by creating spaces where every learner can thrive.

Speaking in the same vein, the Permanent Secretary, Education Secretariat, Mrs. Chinwe Joy Okeke, said the initiative equips teachers with the competencies required to nurture innovative, self-reliant, and future-ready learners.

She added that the training not only strengthens the entrepreneurial capacity of teachers but also lays a foundation for an economy driven by creativity, resilience, and opportunity.

Welcoming guests, the Director, FCT ERC, Dr. Neemat Daud Abdulrahim, explained that the workshop was organized in strong partnership with UNESCO and CEBAR to strengthen teachers’ capacity in delivering inclusive and innovative entrepreneurship education.

She emphasized that the training will equip participants with digital tools and practical strategies to make learning accessible to all, regardless of disability, gender, or socio-economic background, reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to inclusion and sustainable growth.

The CEO of CEBAR, Ms. Carol Barlow, noted that entrepreneurship education enables young people to develop solutions to community challenges. She urged teachers to inspire creativity, teach differently, and become agents of transformation who shape lives and the nation.

The Secretary-General of the Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO, Dr. Lateef Idowu Olagunju, represented by the Head of the Education Sector, Mrs. Eunice Ayara, reiterated UNESCO’s commitment to localizing its global vision through teacher development, school innovation, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable national growth.

She described teachers as the backbone of educational reform, capable of nurturing future job creators and problem solvers when equipped with entrepreneurial approaches.

In their goodwill messages, representatives of NERDC, FCT education boards, and departments commended FCT ERC for prioritizing entrepreneurship education as a core component of teaching and learning in the FCT.

Participants from various secondary schools expressed their readiness to apply the knowledge gained to foster innovation and creativity among students, preparing them to become self-reliant and not just job seekers.

The highlight of the five-day training, which sought to enhance teachers’ understanding of entrepreneurship pedagogy, equip them with practical skills and methodologies, and foster innovation and entrepreneurial thinking among students, was the presentation of certificates to the participating teachers.
