President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a credible, secure, and verifiable national identity system, describing it as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s developmental agenda.

This was contained in a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, following the official launch of the NINAuth App — a digital mobile-based identity authentication application developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) — held at the State House on Thursday.

President Tinubu said the new application represents a major leap forward in Nigeria’s quest for an inclusive, technology-driven identity management system that will drive transparency, accountability, and efficiency across all sectors.

“Today’s official launch of the NIMC NINAuth App heralds a remarkable day in our nation’s digital public infrastructure journey as Africa’s largest identity database,” the President said. “This innovation marks yet another milestone in our collective pursuit of a digitally-empowered Nigeria.”

The President emphasized that the NINAuth App will soon be adopted by all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) for staff and data verification, underscoring his administration’s determination to modernize digital infrastructure and remove bureaucratic bottlenecks.

He noted that the platform will place Nigeria on par with advanced economies by enabling secure and seamless access to essential services while upholding the highest standards of data protection and national security.

“A credible and inclusive National Identity Management System is fundamental to our national development goals. It supports financial inclusion, strengthens social welfare delivery, enhances our security architecture, and ensures accurate population data for evidence-based planning,” Tinubu added.

Highlighting the transformative potential of the initiative, the President said the unified database powered by NINAuth will improve electoral integrity, boost healthcare access, and promote equitable distribution of national resources.

He urged Nigerians to embrace the new era of digital governance, commending NIMC for transforming identity management from a bureaucratic exercise into a modern, technology-driven system aligned with global best practices.

“Together, we are building a nation where every identity counts and every citizen must matter,” Tinubu concluded.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, praised the President for tackling national security and administrative challenges through technology, saying identity verification is the “backbone of governance and service delivery.”

NIMC Director-General, Engr. (Dr.) Abisoye Coker-Odusote, explained that the NINAuth App will eliminate multiple identity ownership and ensure real-time authentication for both government and private sector services.

She disclosed that NIMC has so far enrolled over 126.7 million Nigerians, with approximately 25 million recorded in the past two years — averaging 1.3 million verification hits daily.
