It was a night of tradition, diplomacy, and international camaraderie as Ambassador SUZUKI Hideo hosted a vibrant Self-Defence Forces Day Reception at the Fraser Suites Hotel on 3 September 2025. The event drew over 110 dignitaries, including senior government officials, defence representatives, and diplomats, all united in celebration of Japan’s commitment to peace and partnership.

The reception, held in honour of Japan’s Self-Defence Forces, served not only as a ceremonial occasion but also as a reaffirmation of growing ties between Japan and Nigeria. In his opening remarks, Ambassador Suzuki spotlighted the recent successes of TICAD9 (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) and the Japan–Nigeria Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, praising the momentum in bilateral relations.

“We remain committed to working hand-in-hand with Nigeria to promote peace, stability, and meaningful people-to-people exchange,” the Ambassador stated, expressing hope for deeper cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Representing the Nigerian government, Mr. Enikanolaye, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations, echoed the sentiment. He lauded Japan as a “valued partner” and reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to pursue deeper strategic collaboration, particularly in defence and economic development.

The evening was steeped in Japanese culture—from elegant kimono displays and an authentic tea ceremony set, to a curated menu of traditional Japanese delicacies like sushi, tempura, and sake. The immersive experience not only enthralled the guests but also served as a cultural bridge, bringing Japan closer to its Nigerian hosts and international allies.

As global dynamics evolve, events like these highlight the role of diplomacy—not just through formal talks, but through culture, tradition, and shared values. With strengthened ties and a shared vision for peace and prosperity, the Japan–Nigeria relationship looks set for an even brighter future.
